English

This half term, we will be learning all about the Great Plague in 1665 followed by The Great Fire of London in 1666.
The children will be writing setting descriptions about what the streets were like in London during the time of the Plague. We will be reading the book, Plague, A Cross on the Door, which is about a young boy living at that time. We will also be looking at Diary extracts by Samuel Pepys, written during The Great Fire of London, which will help us to write our own diaries.

Maths

In maths, the children will continue to work on addition and subtraction, before moving on to multiplication and division. The children need to practise their times tables at home. This will support them with their work on formal written methods for multiplication and division as well as to solve reasoning and problem solving questions.

Topic Work- The Plague and Great Fire of London

The children will begin this topic by creating a timeline of recent and historical events that they have learned about during their time in school so far. This will help them to understand how long ago the plague happened.

The children will learn about the plague, what the symptoms were, where it came from and why it spread so fast. They will also find out about The Great Fire of London and how it helped to stop the spread of the plague.

In art, the children will be focussing on their sketching skills using different pencils, through sketching their own representations of the Plague Doctor.

RE

As part of RE, the children will be learning about Christianity and the Christmas Story. They will look at how different people celebrate Christmas and compare these to their own celebrations.

ICT

It is very important that children learn the importance of being safe online. They will complete a learning unit on E-safety. In addition, they will be taught how to create a PowerPoint presentation. Children will continue to use iPad’s and laptops in the classroom.

Science

This half term the children will learn about plants and what they need to survive. They will be carrying out experiments and observing what happens when they change the conditions of growing a seed.

PE

PE is on a Wednesday. Please ensure that your child comes to school with the correct kit – black or navy joggers/tracksuit bottoms, a white or pale blue plain round neck t-shirt, a navy or black tracksuit top (without a hood), school jumper or fleece and trainers. If the weather allows it, we will try to have the children outside for PE sessions.

Homework and Reading Books

Your child will be given homework and spellings on a weekly basis. Spelling homework will be given out every Wednesday. Please make every effort to ensure your child completes their homework and returns it to school every Wednesday.

Reading books can be brought into school every day. Please ensure your child reads at least 3 times a week at home and sign their reading diary. We are continuing to monitor and reward children with a sticker every Friday when they have read 3 times, which goes towards buying a book from the shop.
