Welcome back to school, we hope you had a great summer holiday!
Our first topic this year is ‘Tribal Wars’ and is all about the rainforest. We will be finding out where the rainforests are located in the world, what the climate is like and which animals live there. This will make links with our science topic about animals and their habitats where we will learn how animals are adapted to their environment. Within this topic we will also learn about the people who live in this area of the world and look at their way of life compared to us here in the UK. We will take on the challenge of designing and making a vehicle that would be suitable to use in the rainforest.
This half term we will focus on number and place value skills. Children will learn to recognise 2 digit numbers and order and compare numbers. We will also learn to count in steps of 2,3, 5 and 10 from any number within those times tables, such as count on from 15 in 3’s. It would be helpful for the children to practise this at home to consolidate their learning. We are also going to look at addition and subtraction, which will include using different equipment. We will also look at using different methods to add and subtract 2 digit numbers.
In writing, we will be focusing on sentence structure across different genres such as report writing, instructions and stories. We will research all about rainforest animals and describe them using interesting adjectives and conjunctions such as ‘and’, ‘but’ or ‘so’. In addition, we will look at a number of different texts that link to our rainforest topic such as Rainforest Adventures, The Rainforest Grew All Around and The Great Kapok Tree. We will also learn how to use laptops for word processing.
Every week we will be sending home key words for your child to practise. These words are words that your child will be expected to know by the end of year two so we would be grateful if you could help your child to learn these words and use them in sentences.
PE will take place on Thursday afternoon each week and this half term will focus on throwing and catching skills and outdoor games. Kit required consists of a plain white or blue t-shirt, navy blue or black shorts. PE sessions will take place outdoors, weather permitting. Please ensure that all children have their kit in school.
