Welcome to Year 2

This half term we will continue our topic ‘The Lights are Out’. We will look at a range of Lighthouse Keeper stories including The Lighthouse Keeper’s Picnic and The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. We will use these stories to help us to write an invitation to a fictional character. As part of this topic, linked to the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, we will be finding out what ingredients we need to make a picnic as well as all the other things we might need to organise a picnic for the children in our year group.

This half term the children will be undertaking our KS1 SATs tests. These will take place throughout the week commencing 16th May.

This half term we will be focusing on multiplication and division. It would be really helpful if you could support your child to learn their 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10 times tables as these are the ones that they need to know in year 2. We will also be looking at statistics and graphs.

The children will focus on letter writing, using the features of a letter to write to a character in the stories we are reading. We will also write an evaluation for our picnic.

This term we will be looking at electricity and how a circuit works. The children will be attempting to create a working circuit for a bulb that will light up their lighthouse.

Physical Education

This half term we will be focusing on outdoor games. The children will need their outdoor P.E. kit on a Tuesday.

The children will continue to be taught all about E-Safety and the dangers of the internet.

The challenge task for the children this term will include making a lighthouse with a working light. This will be done through design & technology and science. The end of term challenge will be to make a picnic for the whole year group linked to the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Picnic.

How can you help?

Please ensure your child reads every day as well as practising their 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10 times tables.

Thank you for all your support.
Miss Herrington and Mr Penno
