Autumn Newsletter – Year 6
The Year 6 team would like to welcome you all back to Shaw Wood. We hope you had a great summer holiday and are ready for a fantastic year ahead. Mr Carroll and Mr Parkinson will be the Y6 teachers this year with Mrs Perry and Mrs Taylor assisting in the classes.
We’ve got some great lessons lined up for this term and we are already getting stuck into our topics. The big topic this term is World War Two. We will be learning all about this period by exploring the history, geography, art and music of the time. We will also be using children’s books based on this conflict throughout our English lessons. We are very excited about our upcoming visit to Eden Camp on Thursday 27th September, which we are sure the children will thoroughly enjoy.
As well as learning about WWII the children will be studying ‘Light and Shadow’ in their Science sessions and in ICT they will be looking at the importance of e-safety.
All of Year 6 will be doing PE on a Monday afternoon. Please ensure your child’s PE kit is in school on this day. This term will be focussed on invasion games and gymnastics.
To run alongside our topic work we have set a family homework challenge to research and build a model of an Anderson shelter. If you have decided to undertake this task then it should it be completed by Tuesday 6th November (on return from October half-term.)
Homework will commence from Friday 14th September:
Friday – Spellings tested following Friday
Friday – English handed in following Friday
Friday – Maths handed in following Friday
To help children with their homework we will again be running a homework club every Friday after school until 4pm. This proved very popular last year – being well attended throughout the year. This session is fully staffed where the children can get support to do the homework issued on the Friday.
Y6 Parents meeting
Please remember that we will be holding a meeting for all Y6 parents on Thursday 13th September (3pm and 5pm) where we will run through the format of the year and answer any questions.
End of year residential
We have run this event to Kingswood outdoor education centre at the end of the last three years and we would like to run it again at the end of this year. Details of this will be given at the Y6 parents meeting. Anyone who cannot attend the meeting will receive a letter outlining the proposed residential visit.
Behaviour / Attendance
As ever we will be looking for our Year 6 pupils to set a good example to the rest of the school. The school’s behaviour policy can be accessed through the website. Year 6 is also a very important year for a number of reasons, from preparing your child to move on to secondary education as well as supporting them in preparation for SAT’s. To help with this attendance and punctuality is a very high priority and we would again ask for your support in ensuring that your child is in school and on time ever day.
With best wishes – Year 6 team
Year 6 have worked on sharing secret messages with our friends in France, Germany and Poland. They have used ciphers such as morse code and semaphore to create these messages. Some of the codes have been shared through written notes whilst others have been shared through music as well as torch light.
Year 6 researched the history behind the Picasso painting Guernica. After that, they explored images from recent events in Spain and using this as their inspiration created a modern version of the famous painting.
Look at these fantastic shelters. Many thanks to students and parents for putting in so much hard work. We are very proud of you all.
