|
Our challenge based approach to learning focuses on developing mutual respect between peers, people in the local community and the wider world. Through our carefully planned curriculum, children learn about different faiths and cultures, they recognise and celebrate human diversity. Through the core competencies, children learn to respect other people’s views, even if they do not always agree with them.

Children’s behaviour demonstrates their understanding of respect in action. Children can readily articulate why respect is important, how they show respect to others and how they feel about it themselves. Children are able to talk about the different faiths and cultures they learn about, ask questions and show respect for others beliefs and views.

Democracy
|
The children at Shaw Wood are encouraged to see democracy as an essential component when successfully working with a team. Through the challenge curriculum children learn the significance of each child’s ideas and experiences through discussion as well as learning to respect a range of perspectives. Children are able to learn about different forms of government and recognise the variance in democracy in the wider world. All children are encouraged to use their voice to challenge inequality or unfairness.

Children are able to work cooperatively in pairs and groups, as well as whole class situations. They understand about turn taking and respecting the views of others. Through our curriculum, children develop an understanding of how they can influence decision making through a democratic process. Fundraising for charities, both local and abroad to connect with people in the community and the wider world.

Rule of Law
|
At Shaw Wood, the children are encouraged to think about their own values and attitudes and those they encounter in the world around them. They are taught, through our behaviour systems to understand, contribute to and accept school rules and sanctions. We ensure positive relationships with the local police, who visit school to explain the rule of law to them and the consequences of their actions. Children learn that rules and systems are in place to safeguard them from potential danger. Children are encouraged to express their views and opinions on the application of the law.

Children are able to articulate how and why we need to behave in school and demonstrate they understand and abide by these. KS2 children understand why we have laws, how these work and how the rule of law relates to their own lives. Children are able to discuss and debate issues in relation to these.

Individual Liberty

The children understand that they have the right to have their own thoughts and views, whilst respecting the thoughts and views of others. Self-belief is one of the core competencies within our challenge curriculum, children are encouraged to be confident in expressing their ideas, to resist peer pressure if appropriate but also work as part of a team sharing their ideas and taking risks.

Children are proud of their unique talents. They understand that their views are important and that they have a voice in school. Children are able to work effectively as part of a team.
